Can tokamaks PFC survive a single event of any plasma instabilities?

چکیده
Plasma instability events such as disruptions, edge-localized modes (ELMs), runaway electrons (REs), and vertical displacement events (VDEs) are continued to be serious events and most limiting factors for successful tokamak reactor concept. The plasma-facing components (PFCs), e.g., wall, divertor, and limited surfaces of a tokamak as well as coolant structure materials are subjected to intense particle and heat loads and must maintain a clean and stable surface environment among them and the core/edge plasma. Typical ITER transient events parameters are used for assessing the damage from these four different instability events. HEIGHTS simulation showed that a single event of a disruption, giant ELM, VDE, or RE can cause significant surface erosion (melting and vaporization) damage to PFC, nearby components, and/or structural materials (VDE, RE) melting and possible burnout of coolant tubes that could result in shut down of reactor for extended repair time. 2013 Elsevier B.V. Modeling of Damage and Lifetime Analysis of Plasma Facing Components during Plasma Instabilities in Tokamaks
Off normal operating conditions resulting from plasma instabilities such as disruptions, edge-localized modes (ELM), and vertical displacement events (VDE) in tokamaks are to be expected with the potential of high energy deposition on plasma facing components (PFC). This high-energy dump in short duration, will result in extremely high temperatures of the PFC leading to melting and evaporation ...
متن کاملBoiling induced macroscopic erosion of plasma facing components in fusion devices
During plasma instabilities in tokamak devices, metallic plasma facing components (PFC) can undergo surface melting and vaporization. Macroscopic losses of melt layers developed during these instabilities are of a serious concern to the lifetime of PFC, the damage of nearby components, and potential core plasma contamination. Due to the presence of impurities and dissolved gas, boiling occurs i...

Chaotic magnetic eld lines play an important role in plasma con nement by tokamaks. They can either be generated in the plasma as a result of natural instabilities or arti cially produced by external conductors, like resonant helical windings and ergodic magnetic limiters. The linear stability of high-toroidal-number drift-ballooning modes in tokamaks is investigated with a model that includes resistive and viscous dissipation, and assumes the mode frequency to be comparable to both the sound and diamagnetic frequencies. The coupled effect of ion drift waves and electron drift-acoustic waves is shown to be important, resulting in destabilization over an intermedi...
